Announcement of the exhibition 4D DRAWING.

The “4D DRAWING” exhibition was held in Tokyo in June 2021 and was a great success.
We are pleased to announce that the Osaka exhibition will be held this time.

In this exhibition, Dozono’s “4D Design Tool” was used to create 4D objects digitally, and Fukaji’s “Plotter Drawing” was used to draw them in the real (3D) world. This exhibition will challenge the collaboration of expression that crosses each other’s areas of expertise.

A four-dimensional space is defined geometrically by adding another coordinate axis to the three-dimensional world in which we exist. Objects controlled under the order of that four-dimensional space transform into “peculiar graphics” that cannot be seen in three-dimensional space. When these imaginary objects are drawn in the real world, the distortions created at the boundary of the dimensions create a texture never seen before. During the exhibition, there will be live drawing sessions where visitors can see the process of creation. Please come and experience the “unknown beauty” that emerges from the process of moving back and forth between dimensions.

Hiromasa Fukaji

Designer, graphic researcher (visual expression researcher), born in 1990. Born in 1990, he graduated from Kyoto Institute of Technology with a degree in Design Science.
His research focuses on “Plotter Drawing,” a method of creating contingent expressions that arise at the boundary between the digital and the real using a plotter (a device that converts and outputs vector data), as well as new graphic expressions.
He has received numerous awards including The One Show, CANNES LIONS, NY ADC Awards, and D&AD Awards.

What is Plotter Drawing?
Plotter drawing is a technique in which digital data is converted into physical movement using a plotter (a device that converts and outputs vector data), and the drawing is done using analog brushes such as pencils, ballpoint pens, and brush pens. PlotterDrawing is a method of expression that intentionally creates such accidental expressions that occur at the boundary between digital and real. PlotterDrawing is a method of expression that intentionally creates such accidental expressions that occur at the boundary between the digital and the real.

Shoya Dozono

A computational designer and programmer, born in 1988, graduated from Tokyo Zokei University (2012) and Institute of Advanced Media Arts and Sciences (2014). Since 2016, he has been a member of Qosmo. He has been involved in cross-disciplinary production and collaboration based on computational design using data and algorithms.
He has received numerous awards including Prix Ars Electronica, Japan Media Arts Festival, and The One Show.

Development of 4D (four-dimensional) design tools
The definition of “4D (four-dimensional)” in this exhibition is “four-dimensional Euclidean space,” which adds another axis (w-axis) to the three-dimensional space consisting of the x-axis, y-axis, and z-axis. objects in four-dimensional Euclidean space cannot be seen as they are, but they can be visualized by projecting them into three-dimensional space. However, by projecting them into 3D space, they can be visualized. In this exhibition, we developed an original design tool that can visualize the trajectory of an object in 4D space and convert it into vector data. We have made it possible to move objects of any shape in 4D space.
